Adding Copyright Metadata to Your Photos in Lightroom

How to Add Copyright Metadata to Photos in Lightroom

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about watermarking.  In addition to watermarking your photos in Lightroom, you can also embed copyright information into the metadata of your image files to further state that you are the owner of an image.

What is Metadata in Photography

Here are a couple of things to keep in mind in regards to metadata (also sometimes referred to as EXIF data):

  • Photo metadata is the information and specific details regarding and attached to a particular image file.  This information can include the date created, author, file name, content, copyright info, etc.
  • Metadata can be removed.
  • Metadata is NOT visible on your image.
  • Metadata can easily be applied to images in Lightroom by creating a metadata preset.  This is a quick and easy way to apply metadata to all of your Lightroom images in milliseconds!
  • Metadata is NOT AS EFFECTIVE AS A GOOD WATERMARK for preventing your photos from being shared/printed/altered without your permission because this data CAN be stripped from an image (as mentioned above).

With that said, METADATA IS USEFUL.  In addition to allowing you to add a copywrite quickly, it's also a great way to search and locate specific images based on specific metadata information such as author, date created, camera info, location data, image size, image description, and more.

Where to Find Metadata in Lightroom

Metadata in Lightroom is found in the Library Module.  Metadata has its own specific panel found on the right side of the Library Module, and it will display all metadata information associated with your photo.

Lightroom Metadata Panel

This isn't the only place that you can view metadata:

  • Some metadata can be viewed in the Develop Module.
  • Some metadata information can be seen just beneath the histogram in the Histogram Panel.
  • You can also see some metadata in the main image panel overlay.  To toggle the metadata overlay on and off, tap the "I" key.

How to Customize the Metadata Panel

Keep in mind that you can customize what you see in the Metadata Panel.  To customize your panel, navigate to the Library Module.  On the right side of the Library Module, you will find the Metadata Panel, and at the bottom of the panel, you will see a "Customize" button.

How to Add Metadata to Photos

When you click the customize button, it will open a new panel where you can choose precisely which metadata shows up.

There are MANY OPTIONS available, so scroll down to determine which data you want to appear in your Metadata Panel.  Then, check the boxes next to each data option you want to appear and click "Done" when finished.  All of your selected data will now appear in the Metadata Panel.

How to Create a Metadata Preset

1.  In your Library tab, on the right-hand side of your screen, scroll down to the Metadata tab, and click on the drop-down menu next to Preset.

Lightroom Show Metadata

2.  Here, you can enter pretty much any type of metadata information you want.  There are a lot of categories!

3.  To add COPYWRITE INFORMATION, scroll down to the IPTC Copyright section.  Check the IPTC copyright box and fill in the copyright information you want.  I like to start with the © symbol followed by my name.

Tip: To make the © symbol on a PC, hold down the "Alt" key while typing the numbers 0169 on your right-hand number pad.  On a Mac, click on "Option/Alt + G."  You can also copy and paste the Copywrite symbol from this blog post.

4.  When finished, click Done and choose “Save As” in the dialog box.  Name your metadata preset (“© Gayle Vehar,” for example), and click Done.

How to Appy a Metadata Preset to Photos

Once you create a metadata preset, you can apply that preset to an individual photo or a selected group of photos.  Simply select the photo or group of photos that you want to add this metadata preset to.  With the photos selected, open the Metadata Panel and choose the preset you created from the Presets dropdown menu.

Add Copywrite to Photo Lightroom

  • If it's a SINGLE image, the metadata information will be added automatically.
  • If you are applying the metadata preset to a GROUP of images, a dialog box will open asking you to make sure you want this information added to all selected images.  Go ahead and choose "All Selected" to apply the metadata information to all selected images.

How to Add a Metadata Preset on Import

To apply a preset on import, go to the Import dialog.  You can do this quickly by pressing the keyboard shortcut "Shift + Cmd/Ctrl + I."  Once in the Import Dialog, find the "Apply During Import" Panel.  Under the Metadata section, choose the new preset that you created.  This preset will now be applied to all images you import.  Once you have selected this preset to be used, it will automatically be remembered for future imports and can only be changed manually.
